The Sock, Part 2....Battle-Weary Holey Warriors

The Sock, Part 2
This is the second part of a three-part series on socks. One might even describe it as a hard-
hitting exposé on these inconspicuous garments—or then again, maybe not.

What defines a sock

The Sock, Part 1... Looking At The Big Picture Through A Local Lens. I covered the origins, the business and benefits of socks, along with a profile of a local Alberta sock mill, MOTLEY WOOL. Don't miss it—it's a fantastic read!

In part two, I’ll do a deeper dive into what defines a sock, exploring different categories, materials, manufacturing processes, and global markets.

Before we do a deep dive, why socks? Socks are surprisingly fascinating—to be clear, not in a weird
way (although that could make a quirky little blog if you know what I mean). They’re the unsung heroes of our daily outfits, often overlooked and underappreciated with barely a second thought.

The Unsung Heroes
Honestly when it comes to socks when was the last time you checked out your sock drawer to see it full of battle-weary holey warriors with one toe poking out the front and the heels so worn they could double as fishnets? Yep, guilty as charged. I have a few pairs hanging on for dear life yet like old friends you hate to part with them.

Beyond the sock keepers
Beyond keeping our feet warm and comfortable, socks play an essential role. For dedicated outdoor adventurists, they serve as a technical piece of equipment, protecting our feet from chafing and preventing blisters that can happen when wearing new leather hiking boots or keeping your feet dry when you are on a long hikes in harsh conditions. Also from a health perspective, socks play an invaluable role in reducing friction, enhancing, and aiding in the prevention of ulcers and infections. Also a well washed pair of socks can play a critical role in keeping foot fungus at bay..

When hiking, it is always a good practice to carry a second pair of socks, especially for those longer hikes. Having a fresh pair on hand helps in situations where your socks become damaged or wet, ensuring you can continue hiking in  comfort...

International Sock Enthusiasts
There really isn’t a universally agreed number of sock categories, they can be classified in a number of different ways. However, a popular belief among international sock enthusiasts is that socks are divide into three main categories: casual, formal, and athletic. Within these groups there are various sub-categories like no-show, dress, crew, hiking, running, among others. Some sources go wild with claims that there are more specific types, surpassing 16 categories!.....Due to the ongoing turmoil among the international sock enthusiasts community, this source prefers to remain anonymous.

 Secret Society Known As The
International Sock Enthusiasts

The term " International Sock Enthusiast" doesn't exactly refer to as a secret society bent on global domination through their gilded means one sock at a time. Instead, it is a term used to describe dedicated individuals or groups who have a deep passion for socks for their unique designs, stylish appeal, comfort, or social activism.

The Weekend outdoor adventurist's

This legendary hard-core subcategory
This specialized subcategory is one I'm most familiar with. Let’s dive into the world of hiking socks within the broader athletic socks category. As a weekend outdoor adventurist, I have tried a variety of hiking socks, ranging from wool to synthetic materials.
As mentioned earlier, hiking socks can be considered a technical piece of equipment for the outdoors person and comes in various types depending on their materials., cushioning levels, and style.

The Killer Hiking Sock!
Merino wool hiking socks are known the world over for their moisture-wicking and odor-resistant properties, they are among the most popular choices for hiking socks. Other options include synthetic blends, toe socks, and socks offering various levels of cushioning, ranging from light to maximum.
The Wonder Wool
Taking a deeper dive into Merino wool, why is it considered one of the best materials for hiking socks in Canada?, Because of its finer fibers, it is softer and more flexible compared to other types of wool, making it less likely to irritate your skin. Additionally, its natural softness ensures comfort, even for individuals with feet sensitivities.

Cool-Lite Hiker Quarter Midweight
Other types of hiking socks!
Other types of hiking socks are crafted from synthetics such as nylon, polyester, and spandex. A notable is the Wigwam Cool-Lite Hiker Quarter. These materials are generally know for their durability, moisture-wicking capabilities, lightweight nature, and ability to maintain their shape.

The Formal Sock better know as the dress sock...

The formal sock, better known as the dress sock or the gentleman's sock, is the secret weapon of your sock drawer. This sophisticated type of hosiery is designed to complement suits and tuxedos, paired with dress shoes. Thus embodying the elegance and refinement of  James Bond in the sock world.. Typically these grand feet coverings are made from a finer knit that come in sophisticated shades of black, navy, gray, or brown. Occasionally, they sport subtle patterns or stripes to add a touch of flair. Ensuring your ankles look sharp as the rest of your outfit.

The manufacturing processes of socks
The sock manufacturing process is fascinating! Like many industries, it’s highly automated, beginning with yarn preparation, followed by knitting, linking or sewing, and then the finishing steps.

Motley Woollens Sock Mill

From beginning to end the art of making a sock...........

1. Yarn Preparation:
The process begins with raw materials such as cotton, wool, or synthetic fibers, which are taken to the local yarn mill. From there they undergo the mechanical processes of washing, spinning, and dye to be transformed into yarn. Once completed, the yarn is prepared for the knitting process

2. Knitting:
Computerized knitting machines use the yarn to create interlocking loops, forming a sock tube. These can be programmed with different designs and patterns. The number of needles in machine determines the sock's gauge and texture.

3 Linking/Seaming:
The open toe of the sock tube is closed by a linking or sewing machine. These machines stitch the toe, creating a seamless finish.

4. Finishing:
Socks are stretched over frames and treated with a caustic solution to improve durability, then thoroughly washed to eliminate any residual chemicals. Flat metal foot forms are used to shape the socks, and may undergo steam pressing for further refinement.

5. Packaging:
Once they pass all quality checks, the socks are paired and packaged for distribution.
